The Multiple Truths of the Mappable World - Chapter One * digital - free *
The Multiple Truths of the Mappable World is the first chapter of ODT's ground-breaking book on teaching about many ways to see the world. Chapter 1 begins with a tale of two of the authors having lunch...two people...two feet apart...having lunch. It seems so obvious...but their different positions gives each person a DIFFERENT point of view. What if the two participants are two countries....or peoples? The chapter wrestles with the question..."What is truth?" and applies that to mapping...local street mapping...and mapping the world. All maps (even world maps) are selective -- and only offer part of the WHOLE truth. This is a great reading assignment on "perspective." It covers Mercator's map, Peters' map, and introduces regional sea charts, great circles, Gnomonic & Lambert conformal projections, generalization, and conformality. It ends with an exercise which asks readers how to figure out what's left OFF the map! The main message is "Each map has its own point of view!"
