The map is reproduced from page 11 of Seeing Through Maps by Denis Wood, Ward Kaiser & Bob Abramms

A head drawn on one projection (Robinson’s at top left - #1) has been transferred to the Mercator (top right - # 2) and to a sinusoidal projection (bottom left - #3) and finally to a Mollweide (bottom right - #4). The ‘natural’ profile could have been drawn on any of these and then plotted on the others. This is just a way of getting a sense of what different map projections do to the shapes of continents and oceans.
