"Mapism" article by Jim Marshall * digital - free * from Mercator's World magazine
Mercator's World magazine (July/Aug 1997) featured an editorial by Jim Marshall, who is the first person (to my knowledge) to coin the term "mapism." By MAPISM, Marshall means the tendency to put one's self at the center of the world, as a form of ethnocentrism and discrimination. He says, "Mapism is a frame of reference that comes from seeing a warped view of the world so many times that we grow to believe the deception."
Jim is a Christian leader who is passionate about equal area maps and spreads the word about fair and ethical mapping where-ever he goes. He is currently pursuing a Dr. in Education degree in Christian Leadership at Liberty University.
